How to Clean a Spark Plug? Guide to Check, Clean & Change Spark Plugs

Friends, do you any idea about how to clean a spark plug or how to check or change it. Whenever your machine fails to start or seems to run inefficiently, you should check for worn spark plugs and see if they need to be cleaned. Check your plugs to see if they contain any engine build up regularly in order to check them for any damage. Perhaps every time you change your engine oil you should check the plugs for damage.

A spark plug has the purpose of providing spark to the combustion chamber so that the fuel or air mixture present in the intake manifold can burn during combustion. It is important for cars with gasoline engines to maintain a sufficient level of coolant in order to keep them from overheating.

Importance of Spark Plug Cleaning

It is important to clean the spark plug tip thoroughly since it is the part of the plug that is responsible for generating the spark, so it is the part that needs the most attention. It is located at the end of the spark plug that inserts into the engine & there is a small piece of metal known as the electrode.

When a spark plug is not cleaned properly, it may fail within a very short timeframe. Avoid problems later by cleaning the spark plug thoroughly. If a plug fouls, it is usually caused by engine side factors or incorrect temperature range selection. Replace a plug that does not come clean after cleaning or shows unusual wear after cleaning.

Proper Checking of Spark Plug

If you have not checked the spark plug tip, which is the part that sits inside the combustion chamber of the engine, it’s time to do so. The tip of the engine of your carOpens in a new tab. should be dry and light gray in color, which indicates good engine performance. An engine that has fluffy black carbon deposits on the tip of the needle indicates that it needs more oil. An engine that has a slick and oily tip probably needs less oil or is burning more crankcase oil when the tip is slick and oily.

Safety Protocol of Spark Plug Cleaning

Firstly, it is important to ensure your safety while cleaning the sparkplug. Flames and hot metal can cause injuries to your hands, so you should wear gloves to protect your hands. As a result, you are not directly handling the hot spark plug but rather holding it with a pair of pliers. As far as possible, hold it far away from your body using long pliers to prevent it from touching you.

Additionally, you can use a pair of pliers then you need to be careful not to clamp down on the spark plug too hard to avoid damaging it, but you still need to get a tight grip on it.

How to remove Spark Plug effectively?

It is important to remove any protective shroud or cover that is covering the spark plug. On the top of the spark plug, there is a thick wire which you need to pull off in order to remove the spark plug. The wire might not come off immediately; you might have to wiggle it back & forth in order to loosen it and continue pulling until it comes off.

You simply need to unscrew the spark plug from the socket with the help of a spark plug wrench.

Types of Spark Cleaning Method Top to Bottom

The spark plug has to clean when it gets dirty to function properly. Cleaning the spark plug can be done in several ways. Each can be used alone or in combination to achieve the best results.

Spray Method

The solution should be sprayed on the plug, aiming for the grimiest areas of the plug. Any dirt and gunk that is present will be broken down by the cleaner. Using a clean rag, gently wipe off any extra debris on the spark plug, and repeat the procedure until the plug is as clean as a whistle.

Blowtorch Method

Hold the spark plug inside the flame of the blowtorch and turn on the blowtorch. An ignition plug design can withstand extremely high temperatures, which is the purpose when placed inside a running engine. During the fire, leftover oil or fuel can build up and the plug will be ignited and burnt off. Make sure the plug is exposed evenly to the flame by turning it around.

If the electrode starts to glow red hot, remove the plug from the flame and turn off the blowtorch. A non flammable surface should cool the spark plug.

Sandpaper Method

A piece of 220 grit sandpaper will be needed for cleaning the spark plug. If you wish to sand the bent part of the electrode, you can apply sandpaper under it. You want to remove the discolored build-up that has developed over time on the metal. To see bare metal on the tip of the tool, rotate the sandpaper back and forth several times.

Wire brush Method

You should take a wire brush and scrub the threads of the spark plug with it, using it only to clean them. In this way, the engine will be cleaned off of oil and dirt, which will make it easier for you to re-install it. The most effective way to remove most of the dirt is to scrub in the same direction as the threads, before switching angles to finish off the job of cleaning.

There is no need for perfectly clean threads, but be sure to remove any clumps that are the biggest. Using the wire brush to clean your home is quite a messy affair, and if you do not wear gloves while doing this, you might get stabbed by the wire brush.

File Method

The spark plug should be filed down if any parts are dirty.  It is possible to use a file to clean every nook and cranny between the spark plug and electrode. Until the metal underneath is clean, file away any buildup.

Air Gun Method

It is a good idea to use pressurized air after you have finished cleaning the spark plug in order to blow off any dirt or dust that may have remained on it. In order to place the tip of the air gun into the hole of the spark plug, you will need to attach a tip that fits the diameter of the hole.

The tip of the spark plug should be long enough so that you can reach the bottom of the well. Make sure you dislodge all debris by pumping it a few times and blowing it away all together.

Spark Plug Reinsertion after Cleaning

It is important to set the gap between the spark plug and the electrode before you pop the spark plug back into the engine to ensure that the spark is properly ignited. It is possible to use gap tools for this purpose. It is important that you consult the manual for your machine in order to determine the exact measurement at which the gap needs to be set.

With the help of a spark plug wrench, you simply need to screw the spark plug back into its socket, and you are now ready to drive.

Spark Plug Replacement Cost

A spark plug replacement is one of the most economical maintenance items you can have done on your car. There is nothing better than the fact that spark plugs usually last for quite a while, especially if you keep them in good condition after they show signs of failure at the beginning of their life cycle. The spark plug should last for around 40,000 km to 50,000 km, which comes to approximately two to three years.

When you are not in the mood to visit your local automotive shop for spark plug replacement on a regular basis, you can practice cleaning them with the methods above if you do not feel like visiting them frequently. You can expect to pay about 7 dollars to 10 dollars for a set of four spark plugs if you decide to replace your spark plugs, if you decide to replace your spark plugs. The cost of labor depends on the type of automotive shop you will choose, but it can range between 2 dollars to 4 dollars.

FAQ

Is it ok to clean Spark Plug or buy the new Spark Plug?

The answer is yes technically, but in most cases it isn’t worthwhile to clean spark plugs. My recommendation is not to use it for several reasons. If you clean a plug, it will not perform as well as if you bought a new plug. A sharp edge is the best place for electricity to discharge. The edges of a worn plug may also be worn from cleaning.

Can you drive a car with bad Spark Plug?

The use of a damaged spark plug can lead to a misfire and lead to a high consumption of fuel. As a result, this may also lead to damage to the engine.

Can you clean Spark Plug without removing?

Before you can clean the carbon deposits that have built up on the spark plugs of your car, you need to remove them.
