Materials of Car Frame

Aluminum

Carbon Fiber

Steel

Comparatively to its competitive materials for manufacturing chassis frames, it has a lower yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. Steel has a higher hardness and weight density than aluminum, and it is also less expensive.

Construction of Car Frame

Three different steel sections are used to construct the frames like channel section, box section & tubular section. Long members are constructed using channel sections, while cross members are constructed using box sections. Today, tubular sections are used in three-wheelers, scooters, and matadors, as well as pick-up frames. Accidents, sudden brakes, and loads should not be a problem for the frames.

Types of Car Frame

Backbone Tube

A backbone chassis is similar to a body-on-frame chassis, and is an automotive construction type. Rather than a relatively flat, ladder-like structure consisting of two longitudinal, parallel frame rails, it has a single, strong tubular backbone that connects the front and rear suspension attachment structures and carries the power train.

The body is placed on or over, sometimes straddling this structure from above, despite the backbone being frequently drawn upward and mostly above its floor.

Conventional Frame

Conventional frames are also known as non-load-bearing frames. The frame, which is the main skeleton of a vehicle, transfers loads to the suspension. Engines, power trains, and vehicle bodies are supported by the frame. The axles of the wheels are supported by springs.

Rubber mounting for frame deflection and wood for bodywork are completely different from flexible materials. There are three types of frame sections: channel, tubular, and box. Channel frame sections are good for bending, tubular sections for torsion, and boxes for both bending and torsion.

Perimeter Frame

Like a ladder frame, this frame has the middle rails outside the front and rear rails and inside the rocker and sill panels. Specifically, the foot-wells of the passenger compartment were lowered, resulting in a lower seating height for passengers. It also resulted in a lower roofline, and lower vehicle height, which in turn improved handling and road holding.

Body-on-frame cars became the norm in the United States, but not in the rest of the world until unibody cars became common. On Hudson’s 3rd generation Commodore models, this construction was introduced in 1948. In the 1950s, this type of frame enabled annual model changes and lower cars to increase sales without requiring costly structural modifications.

X Frame

This design was used by General Motors for their full-size American models in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Each rail continued toward the extreme rear, parallel to the engine in the passenger compartment.

  1. Since each row had to cover frame rails as well as transmission and propeller shaft humps, it was specifically chosen to reduce overall height of the vehicles.
  • As an alternative to the common bar between axle and frame, several models had the differential attached by a ball joint that connected to a socket in a wishbone.
  • Although the X-frame was described as an improvement over previous designs, it lacked side rails, so side impacts and collisions were not adequately protected. Perimeter frames replaced this design.

Semi-integral Frame

A part of the frame load is transferred to the body structure in the semi-integral frame because rubber body mounts are replaced by stiff mounts. Compared to other frames, it is quite heavy.

Integral Frame

A frame-and-body construction, also known as an integral or unit frame and body, does not have a frame. Assemblies are attached to the body. The body and frame are welded together and perform all the functions of the frame as one unit.

The metal framework is partly relieved of stress by the body sheets. Compared to a conventional frame and body, this construction saves some weight.

Unibody Frame

Among the most common vehicle frames is a unibody. Car bodies are one and the frames are one. This type of frame can be described in terms of its location and purpose. Vehicles with damaged Unibody frames may develop bent frames. There is a possibility that the car will not be able to drive straight after repairs in the damaged area.

Ladder Frame

Originally designed as a separate frame, ladder frames are one of the simplest, oldest and most commonly used under-body chassis designs. Several transverse cross members connect two symmetrical beams, rails, or channels running along the length of the vehicle.

The ladder frame was originally found on almost all vehicles. However, it gradually went out of favor due to perimeter frames and unitized body construction. Large types of trucks are now the most common vehicles with this feature.

Despite its continuous rails from front to back, this design is not resistant to warping or torsion if simple, perpendicular cross members are used. Rather than sitting inside the frame, the floor pan will sit above it, resulting in a higher overall vehicle height.

Space Frame

Suspension, engine, and body panels share three-dimensional tubes, with the body panels serving only a limited structural function. 

For maximum rigidity and lightweight, the design generally utilizes triangles with all forces in each strut tensile or compressive, never bending. Thus, the weight can be kept to a minimum.

Architect Buckminster Fuller and aircraft designer William Bushnell Stout designed the first true space frame chassis in the 1930s using their understanding of architecture and aircraft design.

Platform Frame

For strength and rigidity, the passenger compartment floor, and sometimes the luggage compartment floor, is incorporated into the perimeter frame, or the backbone frame, as load-bearing parts. Adding ridges and hollows to the sheet metal gives it strength.

There were several successful European cars built on platform chassis, including the Volkswagen Beetle, which was known as a body-on-pan car. German advertisements of the 1950s and 1960s called it a frame floor for Mercedes Benz Ponton cars.

Loads on a Car Frame

Momentary Duration Load

The body experiences a centrifugal force when it curves or corners. A portion of this force is transmitted to the frame and a portion of this force acts on the frame as well.

Inertia Load

The vehicle itself is responsible for these loads. When brakes are applied to a vehicle, and the vehicle comes to rest, the front side of the chassis experiences huge inertia forces. In the same way, when a vehicle accelerates, the entire vehicle weight is transferred to the backside of the frame. Braking and acceleration are the primary causes of inertia loads.

Impact Load

The chassis frame experiences a high impact load when a vehicle is involved in an accident. In order to withstand these impacts, the frame must be sturdy.

Overhead Load

Loads such as these are used by engineers to ensure overloading conditions are sustained. When a two-wheeler is designed to carry two passengers, the vehicle actually carries much more load than two passengers for safety reasons.

Static Load

They result from the weight of the vehicle or its frame components.  A vehicle’s transmission, brake system, suspension system, body, accessories, and passengers are all important.

Short Duration Load

These loads are experienced by vehicles when they pass through broken patches of road. It is this reaction force that affects the vehicle’s frame as a result of its action.

A car can suffer frame damage without too much effort. Watch out for these symptoms:

Visible Damage or bend

Manufacturers built all vehicles using the ladder frame, which consists of parallel rails that run the length of the vehicle. Along its length, crossbars secured the vehicle’s frame. Ladder frames are still used in modern trucks. Ladder-frame vehicles can have a bent frame that is hard to see because it is deep inside the body.
