Various Types of Punch Tools Mechanical Engineers

Center Punch tool

Center punches are hand punches that have a hardened conical point on one end and are made of a short steel bar, which is used to mark the places where holes are going to be drilled with the help of this punch.

Center punches are tools that are used to mark the center of a point by punching it in the center with a punch. Typically, this type of tool is used to mark the center of a hole when drilling it with a drill bit. The drill tip tends to wonder if it is not placed in a recess from the start. By using a center punch, a large enough dimple can be created in order to guide the drill tip. With a center punch, the tip is angled between 60 and 90 degrees, depending on the type of punch that is being used.

There is usually a need to drill a pilot hole when drilling large holes because the size of the drill bit is usually wider than the depth of the indentation created by a center punch when drilling larger holes. In terms of appearance, the center punch resembles a prick punch. It is distinguished by its point having a more acute angle than a prick point, this angle usually ranging from 60° to 67°.

It is important to note that some prick punches have a 40-degree tip, but the angle depends on what type of prick punch one is using most of the time.

By precisely fitting the tolerances of an existing hole, it can be used to precisely transfer the center of an existing hole to another surface in order to accurately transfer the center. Using a threading machine is useful for a number of different purposes, such as setting the exact location of threaded holes created by drilling and tapping an object to a surface or duplicating the pattern of holes in a part that is already present.

One of the more common types of punches for the transfer of geometry is those that have a fixed shank diameter, which is specifically designed to fit the bores of several tapped holes with close tolerances and also to mark the center of the hole on any surface that is nearby.

Features of Transfer Punch

Features of Drift Punch Tool

Pin Punch Tool

The pin punch is a tool that is used to remove bolts and pins and has a straight shank with a variety of applications. A pin punch is primarily used for the purpose of removing bolts or pins from a hole that has already been opened by a drive punch, and after the bolt or pin has been loosened, it can be removed.

As opposed to driving punches, pin punches are capable of driving rivets and pins from a hole to the point where they are removed, something that cannot be achieved by drive punches. In order to remove bolts or pins from holes, the only tool that should be used is a drive and pin punch. When it comes to driving pins into mating bores, pin punches are the most common means of inserting them.

Features of a Pin Punch tool

Roll Pin Punch tool

The roll pin punches, also known as spring punches, are used to drive a rolling pin through the hole in a rolling pin. There should never be any use of a standard pin punch on a rolling pin. Typically, when a standard pin punch is used on a rolling pin, the end of the pin is likely to collapse, enlarge, or distort as a result of the hollow, thin walls of the pin. A standard pin punch is also likely to be driven into a rolling pin and lodge within the hollow core.

You should choose a roll pin punch whose compressed diameter does not exceed the pin’s compressed diameter. The surrounding metal in which the pin is seated can be damaged if a punch larger than the pin is used. In addition, it is not recommended to use a roll pin punch that is smaller than the compressed diameter of the pin. Roll pins are hollow in the center, so the punch may be able to drive through it. 

To support the circumference of the roll pin, roll pin punches have a small projection in the center of the pin tip. In general, solid pins should never be punched with roll pin punches because the tips are not flat. Solid pins will be marred or marked if a roll pin punch is used on them.

Features of Roll Pin Punch

Hollow Punch tool

Features of Hollow Punch

Dot Punch Tool

Automatic Punch tool

As the name suggests, an automatic center punch is a handy tool applied to punch dimples into a workpiece with the help of a machine. As with standard center punches, it performs a similar purpose, but without the use of a hammer, so there is no need to use one.

It is important to note that the body of the main punch is attached with a spring. Lever heads are used to hold the spring in place in order to prevent the spring from moving. Whenever a mark needs to be made, the lever head must be pressed in order to do so. There would be a pressing action on the main punch of the engraving machine, which would result in the marking being done.

Features of Automatic Punch tool
